President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, August 20, held bilateral discussions with Japan’s Prime Minister, Ishiba Shigeru, on the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).

The talks focused on strengthening Ghana–Japan relations, with priority given to investment, international cooperation, and support for Japanese businesses operating in Ghana.

Prime Minister Ishiba extended condolences over the August 6 accident that claimed eight lives, including Ghana’s Defence and Environment Ministers, and pledged Japan’s continued solidarity with Ghana. President Mahama, in turn, expressed gratitude for Japan’s support during the nation’s mourning period.

The leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure, with particular attention to the role of Japanese startups. Prime Minister Ishiba also urged Ghana to help address challenges faced by Japanese investors in the country.

President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s appreciation for Japan’s longstanding contributions through TICAD and stressed the country’s commitment to attracting more Japanese investment. Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation ahead of key milestones in 2027: the 100th anniversary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s voyage to Ghana, the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and the 50th anniversary of JICA volunteers’ service in Ghana.

They also exchanged views on regional and global challenges, committing to work together in promoting peace, stability, and development.

President Mahama was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Roads Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza, and Senior Adviser Joyce Bawa Mogtari. The two leaders are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on Thursday before President Mahama delivers his address at the TICAD 9 plenary.
