President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged the Transition Team to uphold transparency and accountability as it prepares to assume power from the current administration.
His call comes in response to allegations of last-minute recruitments and the disbursement of GH₵240 million to a business partner of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
During a joint meeting on Wednesday, December 13, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Transition Team expressed concerns about the potential financial and operational impact of these actions on the incoming government.
“There are a few signals that have been raised with respect to some contracts at the last minute that will commit the new government. I hope that the joint transition team will deal with it.
“There are also last-minute mass recruitments into all the agencies that will also be a liability to the new government,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the government’s transition team, Fatimatu Abubakar, denied the allegations, stating, “I was so surprised when I heard those comments. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I searched online to check if there were any formal statements until I realised that some meetings were granted that did not reflect the meetings that were held on Wednesday.
“I believe that the goodwill and the commitment that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shown together with President-elect John Dramani Mahama that they want us to work together and come out with a result that is in the interest of this country, That is what they want us to do. As late as December 20, 2016, the President-elect appointed the CHRAJ boss and the NCCE boss.
“It didn’t change. I don’t understand why after winning an election and seeking a smooth transition, we still want to go ahead and throw dust and misinform and cause panic, which will lead people to go out there to cause violence and also to hurt people. There’s no recruitment which is new after we lost the election.”
