Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the 24-hour economy policy advocated by former president John Dramani Mahama. Bawumia, recently elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, asserted that the concept of a 24-hour economy is not new to Ghana, suggesting that Mahama lacks a clear understanding of the idea.

During a speech to a lively crowd in the northern region, Bawumia challenged Mahama’s claim of introducing a new idea, specifically the 24-hour economy proposal, pointing out that various sectors such as hospitals, power and fuel service providers, and certain eateries already operate around the clock. Bawumia highlighted the advancements in digitalization, noting that financial transactions can be conducted 24/7.

In a dismissive tone, Bawumia remarked, “He (Mahama) doesn’t understand his own policy; it does not make sense. I want you to note that in 2024, we are presenting a new vision. I will introduce new policies to transform this country. John Mahama belongs to the past; Dr. Bawumia represents the future,” drawing cheers from the audience.

Meanwhile, Mahama defended his 24/7 economy proposal during a recent engagement with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

He emphasized that the policy aims to address escalating youth unemployment and clarified that it would be contingent on enhanced security and the availability of affordable and reliable power. Mahama assured that the policy would not be imposed on businesses; instead, tax incentives would be provided to those who voluntarily adopt the initiative.
