Manchester City won the Community Shield with a 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Manchester United after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

Manuel Akanji scored the decisive penalty, while Jonny Evans missed his shot, sending it over the bar.

This win helped City avoid a second straight loss at Wembley to the FA Cup winners.

Alejandro Garnacho, coming off the bench for United, appeared to have won the game with a goal in the 82nd minute after receiving a pass from Bruno Fernandes.

He cut inside and scored with a precise shot past the diving Ederson.

However, City came back and equalized in the 89th minute.

Bernardo Silva, also a substitute, jumped higher than Facundo Pellistri and headed in a cross from Oscar Bobb past Andre Onana.

Earlier in the match, James McAtee, who was playing in City’s midfield with 19-year-old Nico O’Reilly, hit the post.

Manchester United almost scored a fantastic team goal when Amad Diallo’s pass just missed Bruno Fernandes, who was rushing in.

United had more chances, with Marcus Rashford missing several of them.

Pep Guardiola was so frustrated with his team’s performance that he threw his water bottle on the ground at the end of the first half.

At the end, City’s manager was happy because Akanji scored the winning penalty after Silva, Sancho, and Evans had missed their chances.

United can feel good about how they played and were also excited about the news of their deal for Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, which came just before the match started.
