Alexander Akwasi Acquah, the Deputy Minister for Health, has called on newly inducted Medical Herbalists (MH) to show unwavering dedication and expertise in their practice to help challenge and overcome the negative public perceptions surrounding herbal medicine.

Addressing the sixth induction ceremony of Medical Herbalists in Accra, Acquah emphasized that professionalism and commitment are essential in dispelling myths and misconceptions about herbal treatments.

He clarified that herbal medicine is not just an alternative but a valuable complement to conventional medical practices.

Held under the theme, “Unlocking the Potential of Herbal Medicine in the National Health Insurance Scheme for Inclusive Holistic Healthcare,” the ceremony underscored the potential of herbal medicine in Ghana’s healthcare system.

Acquah highlighted that integrating herbal medicine into the national healthcare framework celebrates Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and offers citizens a wider array of affordable treatment options.

“By incorporating herbal practices into our healthcare system, we are promoting inclusive healthcare that benefits all Ghanaians,” he said.

Acknowledging the challenges of integrating herbal medicine into mainstream healthcare, Acquah pointed to the successful partnership between the Ministry of Health, the Traditional Medicine Practice Council, and the Traditional Medicine Faculty.

This collaboration resulted in a framework that ensures the safety, efficacy, and quality of herbal treatments.

The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of education and raising public awareness about the safe and effective use of herbal medicines.

He reiterated the Ministry of Health’s ongoing commitment to research and development to substantiate the benefits of traditional healing methods.

He further noted that the integration of herbal medicine into government hospitals reflects the Ministry’s dedication to building a comprehensive and accessible healthcare system.

Acquah encouraged the newly inducted herbalists to actively contribute to bridging the gap between traditional and modern medicine, playing a vital role in advancing inclusive healthcare for all Ghanaians.
