The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has put its nationwide strike on hold after the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) obtained financial clearance for two out of 13 items in their Conditions of Service negotiations.
While the union leadership described the development as “disappointing” and “woefully inadequate,” they agreed to continue negotiations in good faith.

The union had threatened to embark on a nationwide industrial action after a two-year delay in negotiations, prompting the Labour Commission to intervene and order the FWSC to resume talks.
Although the FWSC meeting with the union on May 21st ended inconclusively due to lack of financial clearance, an emergency meeting on Friday revealed that clearance had been obtained for two items.
The union’s General Secretary, Dr. Cephas Kofi Akortor, expressed disappointment but urged members to remain calm as they assess the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns.
A strike would significantly impact healthcare delivery, affecting laboratory services in public health facilities nationwide.
The union represents Medical Laboratory Scientists, Technicians, and Assistants working in various healthcare institutions, including the Ghana Health Service, National Blood Service, and Teaching Hospitals.
