Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has explained why he chose to contest elections as an independent candidate instead of joining a political party.
A-Plus described himself as a nonconformist who values independent thinking.
He compared his stance to his personal views on religion, noting that he left the Jehovah’s Witness faith because he did not agree with uniformity of thought.
“I like those who decided that out of Roman Catholic we can have Anglican, and out of Anglican they could form Methodist. People must think differently,” he said.
A-Plus added that joining a political party would limit his freedom to express his opinions. “I don’t want to be whipped in line and I don’t want anybody to say, ‘Why did you say this?’ and then suspend you from the party, causing my seat to become vacant,” he explained.
He said his independence is guided by common sense, which he believes he has in abundance. “There is one thing I have in abundance in commercial quantities—common sense. I have plenty,” he said.
