Despite widespread concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) could influence election outcomes globally, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has reported minimal impact on its platforms in 2024.

According to Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, this was largely due to the company’s robust defensive measures against coordinated disinformation campaigns.

“I don’t think the use of generative AI was a particularly effective tool for them to evade our trip wires,” Clegg stated, referring to actors behind such campaigns.

Throughout 2024, Meta operated several election monitoring centers worldwide, covering key elections in the US, Bangladesh, Brazil, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, South Africa, the UK, and the European Union.

Meta revealed that most covert influence operations it disrupted were linked to actors from Russia, Iran, and China. In total, the company dismantled around 20 covert operations in 2024 alone.

Since 2017, Russia has accounted for 39 disrupted networks, followed by Iran with 31, and China with 11.

These efforts underscore Meta’s commitment to combating disinformation and maintaining election integrity across its platforms.
