The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced plans to picket at the Jubilee House on September 16 to present a petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regarding issues at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine.

The union has clashed with Future Global Resources (FGR) over the company’s financial inability to manage the mine, citing unpaid salaries, SSNIT contributions, and other arrears since FGR took over.

The protest comes in response to FGR’s failure to meet essential requirements, including recapitalizing the mine as directed by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which has threatened to revoke the company’s license.

General Secretary of the Mineworkers, Abdul Moomin Gbana, warned that if their demands are not addressed, the union will escalate the protest to Parliament and the Lands Ministry until FGR’s mining lease is revoked.

“Beginning Monday, September 16, 2024, at 9 a.m. the union and all its members across the mining industry of Ghana shall converge in front of the Jubilee House to picket and present a petition to the President of the Republic.

“From the Jubilee House, the union and its members shall proceed to the premises of the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources where we shall converge and picket up to the end of the day.

“On Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at 10 a.m. the union and all its members shall converge at the precint of Parliament. Indeed, from Parliament, we shall go back to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to continue our picketing up to the end of the day.

“From Wednesday, September 18 to Friday, September 20 2024 at 9 a.m. daily, we shall continue picketing at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources until the mining leases are terminated and the Bogoso-Prestea mine is put on sale to allow other prospective investors to take over the mine and run it for the greater good of all stakeholders.”
