In a bid to enhance the beauty of Damongo and combat climate change, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, has launched the Green Damongo Project, a privately-led tree-planting initiative in his constituency.

The project, which aligns with the government’s Green Ghana initiative, aims to plant over 32,000 trees in three phases, covering major roads, markets, and highways.

The first phase will see the planting of 2,670 trees along major roads and selected sites, while the second and third phases will cover 66 km and 83 km stretches of roads, respectively. The project will feature Savannah, Mahogany, and Cassia tree species.

Jinapor addressed a large gathering of traditional leaders and residents, emphasizing the importance of collective action in protecting the environment and urging them to embrace their responsibility as custodians of the environment.

He highlighted the project’s goals, including raising awareness about environmental restoration and instilling the value of tree planting in the youth.

The project has received support from the Municipal Chief Executive, Musah Karim Kusobari, and the Deputy CEO of Forestry Commission, Mr Nyadia Sulemana Nelson.

The West Gonja Municipal Assembly has also pledged to ensure the project’s success by forming monitoring committees.

The Green Damongo Project is a significant step towards achieving the goals of the Green Ghana Day initiative, launched in 2021 by the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The project has become a nationwide movement to protect and enhance Ghana’s forest and green cover.

The launch ceremony included the planting of commemorative trees, symbolizing the initiative’s inauguration.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to the people of Damongo for their enthusiasm and support, emphasizing that the project’s success depends on their collective efforts.
