The Ministry of Transport has emphasised the importance of maintaining the newly constructed Jamestown Fishing Harbour, which is yet to be commissioned.

The ministry is urging all stakeholders to support the government’s efforts in ensuring the harbour’s longevity.

The $50 million project, funded by the Chinese government, was completed over four years.

Sector Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, in a media interview following a tour of the project expressed satisfaction with the project’s completion.

Mr Asiamah clarified that while the construction stage is complete, some paperwork and final inspections are pending before the facility can be commissioned.

He underscored the need for proper maintenance to ensure the harbour benefits future generations.

“I said that the project, in terms of its construction stage, is completed. We need to do some paperwork for the transfer to be done to the government. Apart from that, I need to get back to his excellency after the final certificate has been signed and look, based on his timetable for him to come and commission the building.

“At no point had we said that the project was not completed. I said that the project has been completed but I need to be here to do the final inspection.”

The minister also urged the media to help raise awareness about the importance of maintenance, stating, “The media should also try to help me to re-echo the sentiment. We all talk about it, we use people’s money in building facilities and when it’s handed over to the user agency, they are not able to maintain it for the general benefit of everybody.”
