The Minority in Parliament has blamed the recent devastating fire at Adum in Kumasi’s Central Business District on erratic power supply (dumsor) and is urging the government to take immediate action to address the power crisis.

The fire destroyed several shops, injured nine people, and caused significant losses, raising concerns about fire safety and emergency response in the region.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, March 24, Subin MP Kofi Obiri Yeboah claimed the fire was allegedly triggered when power was restored after an outage, sparking flames. He called on the government to resolve the power crisis and urged international organizations to support affected traders.

He also criticized the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for its difficulties in responding to the fire due to a lack of fire hydrants and logistical constraints, which worsened the situation.

However, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor cautioned against drawing conclusions, calling for a thorough investigation to determine the actual cause of the fire.

“The issue of what caused the fire should be properly investigated,” he stated, adding, “You can speculate on radio, but on this platform, we must rely on facts. If my members also come and claim the fire was deliberately set by someone, it could lead to unnecessary chaos. Our focus should be on providing relief to the affected traders.”

Authorities have yet to officially confirm the cause of the fire, but investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, traders and business owners in the affected area continue to count their losses, calling for immediate government intervention to prevent future occurrences.
