The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Ninth Parliament has expressed grave concern over a reported increase in violence, thuggery, and intimidation in the wake of the recent elections.

During a press conference on Thursday, January 9, at Parliament House in Accra, the Caucus strongly condemned the actions of individuals allegedly linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the party’s leadership of sponsoring these violent activities.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps, cited multiple incidents of violence on election day, including physical assaults on voters, attempts to disrupt the electoral process, and harassment of election officials.

Specific cases mentioned by Appiagyei included alleged arson attacks on Electoral Commission offices in Damongo and Tepa, as well as the destruction of electoral materials at the Ayensuano District Electoral Office.

The Minority Caucus called on all political actors to remain committed to peace and respect for the rule of law as the nation navigates the post-election period, urging swift action to prevent further violence and maintain stability.

“…There were acts of vandalism. A vehicle belonging to the NPP Regional organizer was vandalized in Nyankpala, and the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Madam Ursula Owusu Ekuful, had her office and residence vandalized,” she said.

Madam Appiagyei called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that those perpetrating violence were brought to justice.

The Caucus also urged the NDC to focus on governance rather than disturbing the peace.

“We remind President John Dramani Mahama that his electoral mandate is to formulate policies for the development of the country, not to endorse chaos and lawlessness,” the Deputy Minority Leader said.

The Caucus also assured the nation that the NPP Party remained committed to peace, dialogue, and strengthening democratic institutions, and has put measures in place to ensure a smooth country.
