
The Ga Traditional Council has imposed a curfew in Accra in honour of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru II who would be finally laid to rest on October 28,2023
This announcement was made on behalf of the Ga Mantse Traditional council with a comprehensive plan to commemorate and celebrate the life of the late queen mother.
The highlights of the funeral ceremony includes, the ban on other funerals throughout the Ga Manye’s funeral process, a curfew and restriction on trading.
“It is imperative for us to affirm that the funeral will proceed as planned, commemorating the remarkable legacy and contributions of the late Queen to the Ga State and the nation of Ghana,” Mr Parker-Allotey, who is also a former Ambassador, stressed.
“We hereby announce that on Saturday, October 28, 2023, all commercial activities within Greater Accra will be suspended as a mark of solemn respect and final farewell to our beloved Queen,” he said.
Banks, table-top food vendors and health facilities, including hospitals and pharmacies, are, however, exempted from the closure order.
Mr Parker-Allotey, who is also the Chairman of the Protocol Committee for the funeral, indicated that the Ga Traditional Council had received “firm assurances of full participation from the government, traditional rulers and other important dignitaries in Ghana and outside Ghana, signifying their deep reverence and homage to the memory of the late Queen
“The ceremony will take place from October 15- 30, 2023, there will be funerals and noise making throughout this period. however, the main funeral will begin from October 23, 2023.
“On that day, we will bring the corpse of the late queen mother home for some customary rites and rituals. On October 24-25, 2023, there will be a curfew,”he noted
“So inform all of your relatives in Accra, that there will be a curfew as a result of the customary rites that will be performed for the Ga Manye. Given that, when it is 6pm, everybody should be indoors so that we can perform that ritual.”
“Between October 26-27, traders should not open their shop. People who sell essential stuff like foods or operate pharmacy shops can open but other traders, especially market women, must keep their shops closed,” he added.
Naa Omaedru III, also known as Naa Dedei Ablah in private life, passed away at the age of 88 on December 26, 2022, at her Dansoman residence.
Throughout her 59-year reign, she dedicated herself to public and voluntary service, advocating peace, education and opportunities for young people, particularly girls.
