The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has criticized the decision by senior high school heads to penalize teachers for missing sessions of the Professional Learning Community (PLC) Programme, calling it unlawful.

During a press briefing in Koforidua, NAGRAT argued that withholding teachers’ salaries violates Section 20 of Act 651, which ensures that every worker in the public sector is entitled to at least 15 days of annual leave with full pay.
They emphasized that teachers should be supported, not punished, as they are central to the educational system.
Eastern Regional NAGRAT Chairman, Godwin Awoonor-Yevu, claimed that teachers’ conditions of service do not grant school heads the authority to impose sanctions on teachers who miss sessions for valid reasons.
He urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to intervene within five working days, demanding that the Headmaster of Akwamuman Senior High School, Mr. Anim-Addo Asuoko, lift the “embargo” on affected teachers’ July and August 2024 salaries.
NAGRAT gave an ultimatum, stating that failure to reverse these actions would prompt further action from the national leadership.
The PLC program aims to support teachers’ professional development, helping them adapt to the new curriculum and accumulate points required for license renewal.
