Nana Akomea, Chairman of the Communications Directorate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, has dismissed claims by Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong suggesting that the former Vice President was largely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Akomea described Acheampong’s remarks as personal opinion lacking credible evidence.

He pointed out that several independent surveys conducted before the 2024 polls — including those by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Afrobarometer, and Global InfoAnalytics — had predicted a likely NPP loss due to public dissatisfaction with the economy, unemployment, and general living conditions.

“None of the reports identified Bawumia’s candidature as a cause of the defeat,” Akomea stressed, adding that post-election research in 2025 by the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee on the NPP’s electoral loss, as well as studies by the German organisation Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, reached similar conclusions.

According to Akomea, the findings consistently pointed to voter discontent with government performance as the main factor behind the loss. He challenged Acheampong to cite a single credible survey supporting his claim.

Looking ahead to the party’s upcoming primaries, Akomea said recent research by Global InfoAnalytics and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung indicates rising support for Bawumia among delegates — a trend he says counters suggestions that the former flagbearer bore responsibility for the 2024 election defeat…..
