Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, a 70-year-old farmer from the Sekyere Central district in the Ashanti Region, has been named the 2024 National Best Farmer at the annual Farmers’ Day celebration.

With a farming career spanning 50 years, Nana Owusu owns North American Farms, where he employs 168 workers cultivating a wide range of crops, including cocoa and cashew.

As part of his recognition, Nana Owusu received a reward of one million Ghana cedis. During his acceptance speech on November 8, he called for enhanced efforts to ensure food security in the country, highlighting the importance of sustainable agricultural practices in safeguarding Ghana’s future.

The National Farmers’ Day celebration, which took place on November 8, was held simultaneously across the nation to honor the hard work and contributions of farmers to the country’s economy.

The event was attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other key dignitaries, who praised the role of agriculture in national development.

In a related announcement, President Akufo-Addo revealed an increase in the producer price of cocoa, raising it from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per 64kg bag for the 2024/2025 crop season.

This adjustment, which amounts to a 0.03% rise from the September price, aims to reflect the current market conditions and provide better support to cocoa farmers.

Addressing the gathering at the National Farmers’ Day awards in Accra, President Akufo-Addo stated, “On the advice of the producer price review committee, I am pleased to announce an increase in the producer price of cocoa from GH₵48,000 to GH₵49,600 per tonne, raising the price from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per bag.”

He emphasized that this price adjustment is part of ongoing efforts to periodically review and support farmers’ incomes, especially during challenging economic times.

This year’s Farmers’ Day celebration highlighted the importance of agriculture to Ghana’s economy and underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the sector.
