Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, has condemned the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) for petitioning the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over claims of discrimination in the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

The private schools have raised concerns about the government’s 30 percent priority placement policy, which reserves spaces in Category A senior high schools for public school students, arguing that it discriminates against private school students.

During an engagement with students at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Tuesday, November 19, Dr. Prempeh criticized the stance of the private schools, urging them to reconsider their position.

“I heard Ghana National Association of Private Schools are telling us that they are going to court to stop the Free SHS for allocating 30 percent of placements to poor children who go to public schools: the audacity, the audacity, the nerve.

“The reality was that when I introduced 30 percent for equity, I didn’t pluck it from the sky. It already existed but abused for the well-connected and the privileged.”
