As Ghana gears up for the 2024 general elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the nation to prevent religious intolerance from exacerbating political divisions.

Speaking at the “Agent of Peace” campaign organized by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) on Sunday, November 3, Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the significance of unity across both religious and political boundaries.

Affectionately known as NAPO, he urged attendees to prioritize Ghana’s stability and emphasized the shared values of tolerance among all major religions.

Reflecting on the country’s tradition of religious harmony, Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted that, as a Christian running alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a Muslim, their partnership exemplifies Ghana’s enduring commitment to religious tolerance and unity in diversity.

“Almost all the religions gathered here claim to be peacemakers; the Muslim religion, Christianity, and others. We should also not lose sight of the fact that it is getting bad when religious intolerance is coming to add to political intolerance in this country.

“People, supposedly, pastors and Christians are beating the war drums. I serve Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and I will serve him. I am a Christian and he is a Muslim, and it is all for the betterment of the country.

“Nobody should advocate for himself as a peacemaker, and if it is not him, Ghana should burn. We are a religious, tolerant people. We have been religiously tolerant since the days of the Gold Coast till now. Let us not add to the fire with religious intolerance.”
