Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, contends that Ghana has enjoyed a more stable power supply during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s eight-year administration than during the era of former President John Dramani Mahama, when energy supply was often inconsistent.

Addressing students at the Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Accra, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, encouraged support for NPP’s current presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming December 7 general elections to maintain NPP’s governance.

NAPO highlighted the strides made by the Akufo-Addo administration in ensuring a more reliable power supply, which he described as a notable improvement from the challenges faced under the previous NDC-led government.

He argued that this consistency in electricity has enabled Ghanaians to carry out educational, economic, and personal activities with fewer disruptions.

Additionally, NAPO criticized the NDC for raising electricity tariffs during Mahama’s tenure without resolving the ‘dumsor’ crisis, pointing out that despite a 50% increase in electricity costs, there was no enhancement in energy reliability.

“Do you want ‘dumsor’ or ‘Kanea’? We have had ‘kanea’ in the 8 years of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia. And there was ‘dum, dum, dum, dum’ in the four years of John Dramani Mahama.

“Imagine, imagine, a nurse going through training for three years or four years, no light. What is that? No light. Meanwhile, every year, the electricity bill is increased by 50 percent and that is NDC for you. They were increasing the electricity bill when the lights were off.

“They were not buying textbooks for schools and they increased the electricity bill to secondary school and university and when Akufo-Addo came, we cancelled the electricity bill to university and we cancelled it to secondary school.”
