The National Sports Authority (NSA) has carried out a fumigation exercise Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi as part of efforts to fight the deadly coronavirus.
Ghana has reported 641 coronavirus cases with 83 recoveries while 8 people have died.
The stadium has not been used since Ghana’s Independence Day anniversary as renovation works at the 40,000 capacity edifice is underway. The renovation works forced Asante Kotoko and King Faisal to find new home venues for their games this season.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, the acting regional Sports Director Edmund Appiah explained the rationale behind the exercise.
“Everybody in Ghana is aware of the COVID-19 and this stadium is a public place, which people always use for sporting activities and even everybody knows Baba Yara sports Stadium hosted the 63rd independent anniversary for which a lot of people from across the world attended,” he said.
“For us to be sure the facility hasn’t been infected or even if it had been infected I think there is a need for us to disinfect the entire stadium so that people who will come to rent the stadium will not be in any form of risk.”
He added, “Ministry of Youth and Sports/ National Sports Authority (NSA) use their resources for the fumigating the stadium.”
“It’s not true we will spend 20,000 Ghana cedis. NSA can’t take a decision only we sort for quotations with the MOYS before we came out with a final budget for the fumigation. So the cost is 7,000.”
The renovation works at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium is set to be completed by October this year despite COVID-19 outbreak.
