The National Communication Authority (NCA) has promised to reduce data prices by the end of 2024, aiming to provide relief to consumers facing high costs and poor service quality.

This announcement comes amid increasing public pressure and calls for the dissolution of the NCA board, largely due to MTN’s classification as a Significant Market Power (SMP). Critics argue that MTN’s SMP status has led to unreliable data services and inflated prices.

In response, the NCA maintains that this designation is intended to foster fair competition rather than impede MTN’s operations. To address these concerns, the NCA plans to implement measures such as balanced interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality.

Dr. Joe Anokye, Director-General of the NCA, expressed optimism about the reduction in data prices, attributing it to the upcoming launch of the Next Generation Infrastructure Company (NGIC) wholesale carrier-neutral open access network.

This network will enable operators like AT, Telecel, and MTN to purchase data in bulk without significant infrastructure investments, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs.

The NGIC network is expected to be launched in the final quarter of the year.
