The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially opened nominations for its parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central Constituency, following the sudden death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. The tragic accident claimed eight lives, including the outspoken lawmaker who was widely respected within both his party and constituency.

In a statement signed by the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party announced that the nomination process begins today, Friday, August 22, and will close on Sunday, August 24. Nomination forms are to be issued and submitted at the NDC Northern Regional Office.

The statement further outlined key guidelines for the primaries. Nomination forms have been priced at GH₵5,000, while filing fees stand at GH₵40,000. To encourage inclusivity, female aspirants and persons with disabilities will pay half of the filing fee. After the vetting process, the party will release a certified delegates’ list to aspirants.

Party officials have indicated that the primaries are expected to attract strong competition, given the constituency’s strategic importance in the Northern Region and its long-standing loyalty to the NDC.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not present a candidate in the upcoming by-election, describing the decision as a gesture of respect for the late Dr. Murtala Muhammed. The NPP leadership noted that while the seat has historically been an NDC stronghold, their choice not to contest reflects a recognition of the MP’s contributions to national politics and his dedication to his constituency.

The Electoral Commission is expected to soon release the official timetable for the by-election, which will determine who succeeds Dr. Murtala Muhammed in Parliament.
