In a bold display of defiance and frustration, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has mobilized thousands of supporters nationwide for a demonstration today, titled ‘Enough is Enough.’

This protest targets the Electoral Commission (EC) due to growing concerns over alleged inaccuracies in the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The NDC has raised serious issues regarding the accuracy and transparency of the voter roll, highlighting potential irregularities that they believe could compromise the integrity of the elections.

The demonstration is set to occur in all 16 regional capitals across Ghana, marking one of the most significant political events in recent months.

NDC’s Concerns

Central to the NDC’s grievances are claims of errors and omissions in the voter register, including missing names, duplicated entries, and discrepancies in biometric data. Despite repeated attempts to address these issues with the EC, the party contends that the problems remain unresolved.

In a statement before the protest, NDC National Chairman Asiedu Nketiah expressed that the EC’s failure to address these concerns jeopardizes the credibility of the upcoming elections.

“As a party committed to democratic principles, we cannot stand by while an inaccurate and incomplete voter register threatens the integrity of our elections,” he said.

The ‘Enough is Enough’ protest aims to convey to the EC that the NDC demands a credible and transparent electoral process.

Nationwide Mobilization

The demonstration has attracted participants from across the nation, with regional NDC executives organizing efforts to ensure a well-attended and peaceful protest. In Accra, the event is expected to culminate with a petition delivered to the EC’s headquarters. NDC executives, including flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, are anticipated to lead the march in the capital.

National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi emphasized the importance of the nationwide protest in a pre-demonstration briefing.

EC’s Response and Call for Dialogue

In response to the protest, the Electoral Commission has reiterated its openness to dialogue with the NDC. Deputy Chairperson Dr. Eric Bossman Asare encouraged the party to resolve issues through proper channels rather than public demonstrations. Dr. Asare stressed that while protests are a valid form of expression, dialogue remains the most effective way to address the concerns.

Security Arrangements

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its preparedness to maintain order during the demonstration. ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Police Public Affairs, detailed the security measures in place, emphasizing that adequate personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of protesters and the public. She also reminded the NDC of their responsibilities under the Public Order Act, urging supporters to remain peaceful and cooperative with law enforcement.

Political Tensions

The ‘Enough is Enough’ protest occurs at a crucial time in Ghana’s political landscape, with the 2024 general elections just months away. The NDC’s decision to take to the streets reflects growing frustration with the electoral process and the EC’s perceived inaction. Analysts warn that the escalating tension between the NDC and the EC could increase political polarization as both the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepare for a closely contested election.
