Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has sharply criticized the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the party of struggling to govern due to its heavy reliance on political propaganda, falsehoods, and exaggerated claims during their election campaign.

Assafuah argued that the NDC’s rise to power was not the result of sound governance strategies or realistic promises. Instead, he suggested that the party capitalized on deception and misleading rhetoric, which has left them ill-equipped to tackle the real challenges of governance and leadership.

Assafuah’s comments come in the wake of a controversial statement made by John Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu and Minister-Designate for Energy, during the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, in Accra.

In his speech, Jinapor warned that Ghana’s fuel reserves for power generation were dangerously low. He claimed that the country had only five hours’ worth of fuel left to sustain the national electricity grid, a statement that raised concerns across the country.

However, Assafuah responded in an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, January 11, challenging the accuracy of Jinapor’s claims.

He pointed out that despite the dire prediction, over 48 hours had passed without any disruption to the country’s electricity supply, contradicting the Minister-Designate’s alarmist statement.

Assafuah’s remarks highlight his concerns about the NDC’s approach to governance, suggesting that their reliance on sensationalized rhetoric instead of practical solutions is contributing to their struggles in leadership.

“We were all here when John Jinapor who is now the Minister-Designate for Energy made a comment that the fuel capacity that we have is going to last for only 5 hours.

Now, since that time, we have already passed about 48 hours and our lights are still on so that is a lie. These guys should understand that they are no longer in opposition and they have assumed power with lies and propaganda and now the reality is facing them and they seem not to understand that they have to govern.”
