Tension is escalating in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality after National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters stormed the Electoral Commission’s office, demanding the redeclaration of the parliamentary results.
This follows the declaration of Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, as the winner in the Weija-Gbawe constituency during the 2024 general elections.

Shaib secured 32,608 votes, narrowly defeating Felix Odartey Lamptey of the NDC, who received 30,460 votes in a closely contested race. Shaib’s victory strengthens the NPP’s position in the constituency and adds to its parliamentary representation.
Presiding Member of the Assembly, Wilfred Ayitey Blankson, acknowledged the NDC’s concerns about discrepancies in the results.
He expressed concern about the potential for heightened tensions, particularly due to the proximity of the Electoral Commission’s office to the Assembly, which could put its properties at risk.
Blankson urged the Electoral Commission’s leadership to address the issue promptly in order to maintain peace and order.

“We want to protect lives and properties. We are witnessing what is happening in other municipalities and regions. Furthermore, we don’t want anything to happen in Weija Gbawe”.
“We are for peace and we don’t want our toil and the justice we deserve to be taken for granted. The situation currently at the assembly is bad.
“The military and the police are there but the people keep trooping in and out of the municipal assembly.”
