Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Amenfi Central are rallying behind Joana Gyan Cudjoe for the upcoming December 7 general elections, despite her disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Cudjoe has openly criticized the incumbent MP, Peter Kwakye Ackah, labeling him a “Judas” for allegedly prioritizing personal interests over loyalty to the NDC.
The Amenfi Central constituency, a historical NDC stronghold in the Western Region with a voter population of approximately 70,000, has consistently been represented by male candidates. However, Cudjoe’s candidacy marks a significant milestone as she is the first female representative for the party in this constituency.
After winning her primaries in May 2023, Cudjoe faced challenges regarding her eligibility, resulting in a court case that led the NDC to annul the primary election and conduct a rerun. She was ultimately re-elected through acclamation after her challenger withdrew from the race.
The EC’s decision on October 16 to disqualify Cudjoe due to a pending court case has spurred the constituency’s supporters to intensify their campaign efforts.
NDC communications officer Obed Ammisah expressed that the disqualification has only strengthened their resolve to push forward. He stated, “We’re committed to going above and beyond, pushing our campaign from 80% to 100%.”
The party members showcased their unity and determination in a recent health walk and screening event, donning party attire to demonstrate solidarity for Cudjoe.
Supporters are adamant that she represents a candidate focused on community development and have pledged to vote for her regardless of her current status.
Former MP George Kofi Arthur criticized Ackah, suggesting his actions reflect self-interest rather than commitment to the party. Arthur emphasized that the EC has overstepped its bounds by disqualifying candidates, which should primarily be the responsibility of the respective political parties.
Cudjoe has urged all constituents, regardless of their party affiliation, to unite in support of her candidacy, emphasizing that her goal is the overall development of the Amenfi Central constituency.
She stated, “By voting for Joana, we can unlock a brighter future filled with development and progress.”
Despite the disqualification, the NDC’s supporters remain hopeful that Cudjoe will continue her bid for parliamentary representation, insisting that her commitment to the community will resonate with voters.
