President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has addressed the ongoing controversy over the voters register, dismissing the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) demands for a forensic audit. He described their claims as lacking substance.

In an interview with France24, the President pointed to a recent public broadcast by the Electoral Commission (EC), which he believes disproved the opposition’s accusations.

“The EC publicly broadcasted its deliberations, and I believe the entire nation saw that the opposition’s claims had no merit,” he said.

Akufo-Addo also noted that the NDC has since accepted the EC’s outlined programme, signaling a retreat from their previous demands.

“They’ve now agreed to follow the EC’s plan, which implicitly shows that their demands have been dropped. They had to be dropped because there’s no substance behind them,” the President added.

On October 1, the NDC accepted the EC’s commitment to release the updated 2024 Provisional Voters Register within a week for scrutiny by all political parties.

This followed an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, during which the NDC had advocated for a forensic audit.

In a statement by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC welcomed the EC’s decision to re-exhibit the updated register and suggested conducting the re-exhibition both online and at physical centres.
