The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially introduced Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The unveiling ceremony, held on January 13, 2025, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, saw a gathering of sports enthusiasts, football experts, and practitioners who came together to welcome the 47-year-old Franco-Malian coach to his new role.

Chelle’s appointment was confirmed by the NFF Executive Committee last Tuesday, following a thorough recommendation by its Technical and Development Committee.
This move comes after the federation sought a new direction for the Super Eagles, aiming to bring in fresh leadership with an emphasis on international experience and tactical acumen.

At the ceremony, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau expressed strong confidence in Chelle’s ability to guide the national team to new heights, despite some mixed reactions from the public.
Gusau addressed the concerns, acknowledging the passion Nigerians have for football, and appealed to the public to unite in support of Chelle.
He emphasized that the NFF would provide all the necessary backing to ensure Chelle’s success, including resources and logistical support.
Gusau also stated, “We understand the passion that Nigerians have for the Super Eagles, and we ask that you stand behind Coach Chelle as we believe he has the qualities needed to bring success to the team.”
Chelle’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for the Super Eagles. His immediate task will be leading the Super Eagles B team in the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) set to take place in East Africa next month.
This tournament provides an early opportunity for Chelle to assess the team and fine-tune his strategies before the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Looking ahead, Chelle’s major focus will be on the Super Eagles’ qualifying matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with critical games against Rwanda (away) and Zimbabwe (home) scheduled for March.
These matches will be crucial in securing the team’s place in the prestigious global tournament.

Chelle brings with him a wealth of managerial experience. He recently left his position at Algerian club MC Oran, where he had been leading the team with notable success.
Prior to that, he had an impressive tenure as the coach of Mali’s national team, guiding the Aiglons to the brink of the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His track record in both African and European football makes him a strong candidate for the Super Eagles role.
Chelle’s tactical approach and leadership skills are expected to inject a fresh dynamic into the Super Eagles, known for their rich footballing history.
The NFF hopes that under his guidance, Nigeria will return to its place as a dominant force in African football and make significant strides on the international stage.
As the Super Eagles look forward to their next set of challenges, all eyes will be on Chelle to see how he adapts his strategies and leads the team toward success.
