The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that the Authority is prepared to start registering Ghanaians living abroad, as mandated by the NIA Act, 2008 (Act 750).

Prof. Ken Attafuah stated that a 10-member team will travel to Ottawa, Canada, to pilot the registration process and train local officials.
The team will utilize Ghana’s missions abroad as registration centers, with support from mission staff.
Since last year, the NIA has been collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to create a roadmap for this initiative.
Mission staff have been trained on the registration process, and Mobile Registration Workstations (MRWs) will be deployed to Ghanaian missions.
At a public hearing before the Assurances Committee of Parliament on August 26, 2024, Prof. Attafuah mentioned that the pilot exercise would also include public sensitizations.
The team is scheduled to conduct similar registration activities in Toronto, Washington, and New Jersey.
The team is expected to depart during the weekend of August 26, 2024.
The National Identification Authority Act, 2008 (Act 750) requires the NIA to register Ghanaian citizens residing both inside and outside Ghana onto the National Identification Register (NIR).
