Nigeria has received 10,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), marking the first delivery of the vaccine to the country, which has reported 40 Mpox cases with no fatalities to date.

Muyi Aina, executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), described the donation as a “critical step” for Nigeria. He noted that this batch is part of approximately 200,000 doses available globally.

The Nigerian government plans to prioritize five states—Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, Lagos—for vaccine distribution. Details on the distribution schedule and priority recipients have not yet been announced.

U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills, speaking at the vaccine handover ceremony, encouraged the Nigerian government to continue mobilizing domestic resources to secure additional vaccines to combat Mpox.
