In 2025, Nigeria will join Ghana as the only African nations competing in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, a renowned U.S. event that challenges students’ spelling and vocabulary skills.

For nearly 20 years, Ghana has been the sole African representative at the Bee. Now, with the efforts of the Young Educators Foundation, which organizes the event in Ghana, and their partnership with Lucid Education Initiative, Nigeria will finally participate.

This collaboration aims to ignite a passion for spelling and literacy among Nigerian youth.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is more than just a contest; it celebrates discipline, word mastery, and academic excellence.

It provides Nigerian students and schools with global exposure and enhances cognitive skills, critical thinking, and mental agility in young learners. It also aims to inspire curiosity and a lifelong love for language and learning.

“We aim to equip students with the skills to use words as powerful communication tools from an early age,” said Eugenia Tachie-Menson, CEO of Young Educators Foundation. “We are thrilled that Nigeria will join Ghana in May 2025 as the second African country in the global competition.

This program in Ghana has reignited a national discourse on the importance of literacy and correct spelling, while inspiring many student-centered programs in mainstream media.

We are confident that the benefits Ghanaian students have gained from participating in this program for nearly two decades will extend to Nigerian students as well,” she concluded.
