In its 2023 metric report, Netflix revealed that subscribers watched an astonishing 183 billion hours of content last year, with 90 billion hours consumed in the second half alone.
The report highlighted the performance of top African films on the platform, ranking them based on viewership metrics.
Out of the top 13 films, Nigeria and South Africa dominated the list, occupying six and seven spots, respectively.

“The Black Book”, a Nigerian movie, emerged as the most-watched African film, garnering an impressive 28.3 million views.
South African films “Fatal Seduction” and “Unseen” followed closely, with 18.3 million and 18 million views, respectively.
The top five was rounded out by “Number Number”, a South African movie, and “Blood Vessel”, a Nigerian film, with 10 million and 8.9 million views, respectively.
The report also noted that the top 13 African movies collectively amassed 126 million views, with seven films and six series making the cut.
Nigerian movies “Shanty Town” and “A Sunday Affair” secured the sixth and seventh spots, with 8.2 million and 7 million views, respectively.
South African movies “Silverton Siege” and “Queenstown Kings” followed, with 6.7 million and 4.3 million views, respectively.
The list also included Nigerian movies “Jagun Jagun” and “Young, Famous and African”, with 4.9 million and 3.5 million views, respectively, as well as South African series “Kings of Jo’burg” with 4.1 million views.
The report showcased the growing demand for African content on the platform, with Nigerian and South African productions leading the way.
