The 18-year-old substitute latched onto Vanderson’s perfectly placed long ball in the 71st minute, firing past Marc-André ter Stegen to secure a stunning win for Monaco.

George Ilenikhena’s strike marked his first goal since joining Monaco from Royal Antwerp this summer, making for a memorable debut in Europe’s top competition.

Barcelona was reduced to 10 men just 10 minutes in when Eric Garcia received a straight red card for a foul on Takumi Minamino after a misplaced pass by Ter Stegen.

Monaco capitalized soon after, with Maghnes Akliouche slotting home to take the lead.

Despite the setback, Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal equalized with a brilliant low shot into the bottom corner after cutting inside, scoring his first Champions League goal.

However, Ilenikhena’s goal in the 71st minute ultimately sealed the game for Monaco, handing Barcelona a surprising opening defeat.

Monaco had additional opportunities to extend their lead, with Vanderson testing Ter Stegen and Minamino hitting the crossbar, while Folarin Balogun had a late penalty overturned by VAR.

This upset victory leaves Barcelona with much to consider as they look to recover from a disappointing start to their Champions League campaign.
