The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has announced that the commission will hold a meeting to discuss the strike notice issued by Organised Labour.

The strike, scheduled to begin on October 10, 2024, is a response to the government’s failure to address illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

In an interview with Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Tuesday, Mr. Asamoah stated, “We just received notice of it, and the commission will be meeting on [Wednesday] to determine the way forward. Fortunately, since the strike is set to start on the 10th, we have time to consider it.”

Organised Labour, which represents various unions and workers’ groups, has expressed concerns about the harmful effects of galamsey on the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

Despite setting a deadline for the government to take meaningful action by the end of September, their demands have not been met, leading to the call for a nationwide strike.
