Samuel Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has dismissed the idea of merging ECG, Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), and Volta River Authority (VRA).

Despite suggestions that a merger could improve electricity supply, Mahama, in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, stated that the current system is already effective.

He emphasized that only minor adjustments are necessary and that merging the companies would not enhance the system.

He remarked, “No, it wouldn’t be a great idea. The system as it stands is perfect; we just need a few more tweaks here and there.”

“For example, for the longest time, we only had VRA, now the IPPs are involved, so you probably need the job of an independent market operator to man the distribution room and probably allow for equity within the game.

These are business decisions, business management, and best practices that need to be infused into the game. If you ask me now that we should merge, no.”
