Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, has denied claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government was responsible for constructing the second phase of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

During an appearance on the Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday, he stated, “They have not built a phase two of UGMC. They didn’t construct anything for phase two. The UGMC comprises eight separate buildings, all of which were completed by January 4th, 2017. They have not added any new structures. The entire project cost $217 million.”

He continued, “We left behind a 650-bed hospital. The only addition is an eight-unit bungalow.

Phase one included a 32-unit bungalow. Adding an eight-unit bungalow does not qualify as building phase two. There were also minor upgrades, such as IT connectivity and staff training.”

Ofosu further highlighted that the UGMC was originally designed to be a 1,000-bed facility, with the only potential addition being more beds.

“So, no, you have not built a phase two. The hospital was designed as a 1,000-bed facility.

The most you can do is add more beds, but all eight buildings were already in place by January 4th, 2017, when President Mahama commissioned it. By September 2016, the hospital had been equipped,” he concluded.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the NPP government’s contributions to Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.
