The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Walewale after a disruption occurred during the vote-counting process in the re-run of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary in the Walewale Constituency.

Kamara Bawah, the individual responsible for damaging some ballot papers, has been arrested and is currently assisting the police with investigations.

Security has been heightened in Walewale and surrounding areas to maintain law and order.

The disruption took place after voting had ended and the sorting of ballots was in progress, prompting police officers to remove the ballot boxes from the room.

According to the chairman of the election committee, the intervention was necessary due to the actions of an unknown individual, which led to the arrest. He confirmed the incident in an interview with Channel One News.

Parliamentary aspirant Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru expressed his deep disappointment with how the process was handled, casting further doubt on the credibility of the primary election in the Walewale constituency.

“This is a very pathetic situation. We pride ourselves in democracy. We always claim and boast of same that we are the beacon of democracy. But the basis upon which liberal democracy is founded, NPP prides itself in that.

“A democratic process has been organised, sorting was done and someone out of fear knowing that there is imminent defeat, has decided to disrupt the process. We know the person. I have raised issues.

“This morning you remember the chaotic situation that visited the accreditation by the same person. So, if someone tells me he doesn’t know that person, then I am afraid… He has been arrested; the former constituency chairman of Yagaba Kubori, Akamara Bawa.

“You tell me you don’t know him, you don’t know someone who has been on the campaign platform campaigning for the MP. Such a person has abused the processes, disrupted the processes, I just hope the police will let the law take its course,” he stated.
