On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the process of selecting a successor for the late MP for Ejisu, John Kumah, began with the opening of nominations. Despite his initial interest in running, influential party figures persuaded Agyapong to reconsider.

Chairman Wontumi stated that Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, along with Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP’s General Secretary, played key roles in advising Agyapong to withdraw his candidacy. They believed that losing two influential figures simultaneously, including the late MP John Kumah, would significantly weaken the party’s position in the constituency.

In an interview with Amansan TV, he explained that despite the constituency chairman’s initial interest in contesting the Ejisu elections, the General Secretary of the NPP, the former Majority Leader, the regional minister, and many elders in the region approached him. They advised him to advise the constituency chairman to remain as chairman. He emphasized the importance of this decision, stating, “Because we know John was a bulldozer, so if two pillars are going, it will be a blow to the constituency.” Therefore, based on the advice from the former Majority Leader and the General Secretary, the constituency chairman decided to withdraw his candidacy.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced the resolution to bar Kofi Ampofo Agyapong, the Ejisu Constituency Chairman, from participating in the forthcoming parliamentary primaries.
