Former Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong, has dismissed suggestions that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) current internal review process reflects confusion or division within the party. Instead, he described it as a deliberate and methodical effort to ensure sound decisions are made in the wake of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

His clarification comes amid growing public discourse and criticism from political observers questioning the effectiveness and transparency of the NPP’s post-election restructuring process.
“There is nothing untoward happening. We are simply being guided and deliberate, ensuring that every step we take is well thought out. We want the best for our party,” Acheampong stated during an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on April 17.
He explained that the NPP is adhering strictly to its constitution, which outlines the framework for decision-making and ensures inclusive representation within the party’s leadership structures.
“Our party is governed by a constitution, and that constitution ensures representation of our supporters through the National Council—the highest decision-making body aside from Congress. That’s the beauty of our democratic structure,” he emphasized.
Acheampong further noted that the party is not rushing to conclusions but is carefully studying the recommendations presented by the Professor Mike Oquaye-led post-mortem committee. The committee was tasked with examining the causes behind the NPP’s electoral losses in both the presidential and parliamentary contests.
In response, the party’s National Executive Committee has established a nine-member constitutional review team to analyze the report and propose reforms where necessary.
Acheampong reaffirmed the party’s commitment to transparency and proper governance, stressing that the NPP will abide by the directives of the National Council to ensure all actions taken are grounded in the party’s constitution and long-term interest.
“We wouldn’t want to break the rules of the Council, and so we are going to follow the advice of the Council. It has set up another body which is going to study the report that we have received and then offer the Council its recommendation. The Council will sit with that recommendation and take the next steps,” he said.
