The Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, has called for an urgent and detailed investigation into the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel in Obuasi that resulted in seven fatalities.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners breached the mine’s security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area.
Armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, and other tools, the miners reportedly opened fire on the military when confronted, according to a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces.
Kwaku Kwarteng expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of lives and emphasized the need for justice and accountability. “I have contacted both the Divisional Police Command and the Municipal Police Command, who have assured me that investigations are underway into the loss of lives and injuries,” he stated.
He added that he is confident the Military Command is reviewing the events leading up to the incident and the confrontation itself. Kwarteng stressed that the findings of these investigations must be presented to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure transparency and accountability.
“It is my expectation that our security agencies would put the findings of their reviews and investigations before His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama,” he stated.
He further urged the government to expedite the investigative process, saying, “We urge government to speed up these investigations and act swiftly on the findings to ensure that the law takes its course and that justice prevails. Once again, we send our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.”
In response to the incident, President John Dramani Mahama has already ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly clashes.
