Elorm Ama Governor-Ababio, a lawyer and social media influencer, along with Oliver Barker Vormawor and 30 other Democracy Hub protesters, have filed a lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Justice, citing violations of their fundamental rights.

The suit, representing 32 protesters, claims that their rights to freedom of movement, protest, demonstration, personal liberty, dignity, and freedom of expression were violated during a recent demonstration.

The protest, held from September 21-23, escalated into violence following clashes with the police.

Madina MP Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, acting as the protesters’ legal counsel, is seeking a High Court order to enforce their fundamental human rights.

Additionally, he is advocating for protection against unlawful arrest, detention, malicious prosecution, and ensuring the rights to legal representation and bail pending trial.

The grievances stem from allegations that the protesters obstructed roads, dismantled barriers, disrupted traffic, and caused damage at Accra’s 37 Roundabout.

Currently, 53 protesters are in custody; 9 have been remanded in prison, while the rest remain in police custody.

Prosecutors deny mistreatment claims, stating the accused received proper care, including meals from a local restaurant. However, defense lawyers argue that the conditions are harsh and are pressing for bail.

Prosecutors oppose bail due to the lack of known addresses for the accused, leading the judge to deny bail and remand the protesters until October 8.
