Google faces a bigger threat from Sam Altman’s OpenAI than from U.S. antitrust regulators.

Despite a recent ruling that found Google guilty of creating an illegal search monopoly, it is the rise of AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT that is impacting Google’s market dominance.

Arvind Jain, a former Google engineer, believes that AI’s influence is more immediate than the effects of regulatory rulings, which take longer to impact the market.

Google, which has long dominated search with around 90% of the global market share, is seeing competition from AI advancements.

Apple has even partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to its devices and is considering bringing Google on board as well.

Microsoft has also introduced its AI-powered search engine, SearchGPT, which is starting to challenge Google’s dominance.

A former Google executive predicted that AI could surpass the pace at which the Department of Justice (DOJ) acts against Google, potentially ending its search monopoly sooner.

Despite Google’s resources and research in AI, it has struggled to keep up with OpenAI, which has attracted many younger users. Google’s initial AI products faced criticism for errors and issues, further impacting its trust and reputation.

The regulatory scrutiny and AI competition are intertwined, with the DOJ aiming to ensure that Google does not extend its dominance in a changing market.

While the antitrust ruling might not immediately affect Google, it could open the search market to more competitors, though ending Google’s dominance will be challenging.
