President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative is solely focused on combating corruption and ensuring accountability in public office, not targeting individuals unfairly.

Speaking to members of the Ghana Bar Association during a courtesy call on Wednesday, Mahama highlighted ORAL’s role as a structured platform for whistleblowers to report corruption, with proper investigative mechanisms in place.

“One of the issues we are confronted with is corruption and accountability in office. It has become the norm for people to dip their hands into the public purse or misappropriate funds,” Mahama stated.

He emphasized that corruption was one of the top concerns of Ghanaians during the last election campaign, necessitating a stronger government stance.

Mahama explained that ORAL provides a direct channel for whistleblowers, with a hotline that has received over 2,000 calls. While some allegations were unfounded, others had merit and were referred to the Attorney General for further action.

He stressed that the initiative was not a tool for political persecution but a crucial mechanism in the fight against corruption.

“So I just wanted to clarify that it’s not an instrument for witch-hunting anybody. It’s an instrument for assisting in the fight against corruption,” Mahama affirmed.

His remarks underscored the government’s commitment to tackling corruption and promoting transparency in governance.
