At least 56 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a football match in Nzérékoré, Guinea, with some reports suggesting the death toll may exceed 100.

The chaos was triggered by controversial referee decisions, including the dismissal of two players from the visiting team, Labé, and the award of a penalty kick.

Tensions escalated as fans invaded the pitch, prompting police to use tear gas. Overcrowding in the stadium, which had only one small exit, exacerbated the situation as panicked spectators scrambled to leave.

Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes, with unresponsive bodies, including children, scattered across the area. Hospitals were overwhelmed, with hallways crowded with injured spectators and full morgues.

Videos on social media captured the aftermath, showing fans climbing walls in a desperate bid to escape.

The match was part of a tournament linked to campaigns for Guinea’s junta leader, President Mamady Doumbouya. Critics argue poor stadium infrastructure and government negligence contributed to the disaster.

Prime Minister Oury Bah has promised an inquiry, and Guinea’s football association and CAF have offered condolences, calling for reforms to prevent such tragedies.
