Hackman Owusu Agyemang, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Council of Elders, has expressed concerns about the mounting pressure on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to select a running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
Owusu Agyemang emphasized the importance of allowing Dr. Bawumia the freedom to choose a suitable partner, noting that the flagbearer’s name is the one that appears on the ballot paper.

He urged party members to refrain from adding unnecessary pressure on Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to win the election.
Owusu Agyemang believes that Dr. Bawumia should be given the opportunity to travel, consult, and weigh his options carefully before announcing his running mate.
The NPP Chairman’s comments come as speculation mounts about potential running mates, including Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Despite the pressure, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has assured that Dr. Bawumia will announce his running mate by the end of July, with the aim of avoiding past mistakes and “breaking the 8”.
Owusu Agyemang’s appeal for patience and understanding echoes Kodua’s sentiments, as the party seeks to make a strategic decision that will secure victory in the upcoming election.
By allowing Dr. Bawumia the space to make a thoughtful decision, the NPP hopes to present a strong ticket that will appeal to voters and ultimately lead the party to success.
