Ernest Owusu-Bempah, Deputy Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs and Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, of engaging in “constitutional lawlessness” after NDC lawmakers occupied the Majority side of the House.

This followed the Speaker’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

Owusu-Bempah criticized the move as an overreach of the Speaker’s authority, stating that the Supreme Court, not Parliament, interprets the law.

He connected the incident to former President John Mahama’s claims of the NDC’s revolutionary background, suggesting the party resorts to undemocratic tactics when threatened.

In response, Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent NPP member, advised both NPP and NDC MPs to focus on policy issues such as job creation, cost of living, and economic stability ahead of the 2024 elections, rather than engaging in what he called “macho drama” in Parliament.

He praised Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for avoiding confrontation and urged both parties to respect the Supreme Court’s rulings.

The conflict arose after Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, a decision the NDC has adhered to despite a Supreme Court order staying the execution.

The Speaker subsequently adjourned parliamentary proceedings indefinitely.
