Ghana’s Parliament is set to reconvene today, Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, following a recall by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

The session is focused on resolving critical issues that have been stalled due to an intensifying standoff between the Majority and Minority caucuses.

The conflict began after Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats—Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West—as vacant, a decision that the Majority caucus criticized as undermining their representation.

This prompted Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court.

In a key move, the Supreme Court placed a stay on Bagbin’s decision, temporarily reinstating the contested seats, further escalating tensions within Parliament.

The standoff reached new heights when the Minority caucus, seizing the opportunity of the declared vacancies, took control of the Majority side of the chamber.

This led Speaker Bagbin to adjourn the House, raising concerns about the stability of Parliament and sparking debates on the balance of power within the legislative body.

Amid concerns that the ongoing deadlock could delay important national policies and programs, the Majority caucus called for Parliament’s urgent recall.

They emphasized the need to resume legislative business, warning that further delays could impede crucial initiatives across the country.

Today’s session is expected to be a pivotal moment, with both sides preparing to debate and attempt to break the deadlock.

The resolution of this power struggle could have significant implications for the future of Ghana’s legislative landscape.
