On Friday, July 5, 2024, the Accra Sports Stadium will host a unique football match, pitting the Parliament of Ghana’s staff and members against a team of retired Black Stars players.

This ceremonial match, serving as the curtain-raiser for the inaugural Democracy Cup between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, will feature Speaker Alban Bagbin leading his team against a squad captained by the legendary Stephen Appiah.

The match is part of the activities marking the 30th anniversary of Parliament, which was announced by Speaker Bagbin.

He encouraged Parliamentarians to actively participate in the series of events lined up for the anniversary and to prepare for the match.

The Speaker outlined the planned events, including a lecture on Parliament’s role in Ghana’s thriving democracy, mock parliamentary sittings, debates, peace walks, and fun games.

The anniversary celebration is a collaboration between Parliament and Primeval Consult to commemorate the enactment of the 1992 constitution and the Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

Speaker Bagbin expressed gratitude to partners and stakeholders who have supported Parliament’s work and proposed the establishment of the Democracy Cup, which will enhance the anniversary celebration.
