A 21-year-old, Mohammed Huzeinu, has been sentenced to 100 days in prison by an Accra District Court for invading the pitch during Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025.

His actions caused a disruption to the match and could result in financial penalties for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), as international football bodies impose fines of at least $10,000 for such security breaches.

The GFA has reaffirmed its strict stance against pitch invasions, stressing the importance of discipline and adherence to match-day regulations.

The incident occurred when Huzeinu sprinted onto the field in an apparent attempt to embrace Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo.

Security officials swiftly intervened and escorted him off the field. He was subsequently arrested and held at the Ministries Police Station before facing trial.

This marks the fifth pitch invasion at a Black Stars match in the past five years, raising growing concerns about stadium security.

Similar incidents occurred during Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers against Angola and South Africa, resulting in financial penalties for the country.

Authorities hope that Huzeinu’s sentencing will serve as a deterrent to other fans, reinforcing the importance of maintaining order and protecting Ghana’s reputation in international football.
